If you start out with a compressor "off", and work from there, it's not too likely your gonna clip the inputs or outputs, unless you were tracking too hot. The long and short of all that is the beginning. When I feel my audio is in control, I will adjust the output gain till the volume is fitting in the mix. As I do this, I adjust the gain knob to keep the volume close to where it started. As you do this, the volume should go down as the audio gets compressed. It has extra features like filter sidechain, external sidechain and mix. With the CLA-2A and 3A, the gain knob is OUTPUT GAIN. LALA is a Teletronix LA-2A optical limiter / compressor simulation. They often will clip on the output when I first load them up. With specific regard to the CLA compressors, I find that when you first open them the output gain is always a bit much. Just toggle the In, Out and GR and you can figure out which one it is. Wholesome good sound good compression gadget. Generally if you're seeing a clip indicator that means your signal is clipping the compressor which means your input may be a bit hot.
